In a 2011 study, researchers found that fulvic acid inhibited the aggregation of tau protein and promoted the disassembly of pre-formed tau fibrils in laboratory experiments.
And then came Amyloid-beta.
Another study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate fulvic acid and the Aβ(17–42) peptide, a fragment associated with amyloid aggregation.
The simulations showed that fulvic acid interrupted the formation of Aβ peptide dimers — another intriguing clue for researchers.
Why does this matter?
Tau tangles and amyloid-beta aggregation are two of the biological features strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease.
The possibility that a naturally occurring substance can interact with these protein structures has made fulvic acid an interesting subject for neurodegenerative research.
Scientific reviews of Shilajit have highlighted fulvic acid and other humic substances as potential contributors to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cognitive-support properties. Research has therefore explored Shilajit and fulvic acid as promising areas for future neuroprotective research.
